CPL Zheng Hui - Experience on Intermediate Survival Course

On the first day at the ferry terminal, I saw other cadets from various districts that I don't know. When we reached the place, we realise that the instructors are very nice and often tell us jokes.

The first programme was to introduce us to plants that can be eaten for survival. There are many different types of plants that can be eaten. After that, we had our lunch and we went straight to learn how to about fire making and killing a frog. We were separated into different groups and after that the instructors taught us how to set up a fire. We took a few attempts to make the fire last longer. Next was killing the frog in our pairs. Although some of us felt sad, for survival and learning we have to kill it fast and end it quick. I took out the skin and the intestines of the frog. We then cooked it.

Later it was about learning basic first aid. After that when it was at night, we were then separated in pairs to hike. We were sent to walk in the forest. We listened to the instructions on which road to take. It was quite fun because you have to listen very carefully to know where to go, especially when no torchlight was allowed and we had fun walking around to search for the checkpoints. After that we were not allow to bath only putting powder when we are going to sleep .

The next day we did morning physical training (PT) and soon after that we learnt how to make a shelter and trap & snare to catch animal. There were tests and practices and thus in order for the group to pass, we have to demonstrate great teamwork. In the end, we all passed and we were happy.

We changed from stranger to friends. I did not regret coming for this course because it was exciting and fun and making new friends and I hope that my juniors, the Secondary One would come because this course is only for sec 2, so if you miss it there will not be any more chances.  Do cherish this opportunity to have fun so I hope you will come.

Message from SDBA for our participation in the Dragonboating Competition

To Participating Schools:

The Singapore Dragon Boat Association would like to thank you very much for participating in the 16th National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship 2016 which was successfully held on Friday, 27th May 2016 at the Marina Bay, Singapore.

This year, we are very happy to see the participation of a total of 29 Schools, 15 NCC (SEA) teams, 68 crews and a total of 1,168 athletes, ages from 13 to 18 years old. Compared to 48 crews in 2015, this is an almost 30% increase in participation! It is indeed a very encouraging news for the sport.

We met many talented paddlers from each school and witnessed a fair and friendly competition. Most importantly, we have seen great sportsmanship throughout the race amongst all the students, which is really heartening.

Once again, we would like to thank all paddlers, coaches, teachers-in-charge and supporters for all the hard work that you have put in towards the 16th National Schools’ Dragon boat championship. Well done, schools!

Once again, SDBA would like to say a big THANK YOU for your strong support to the sport. We look forward to your school’s participation in other SDBA dragon boat races and the 17th National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship in 2017.

Warmest regards

Mr Lim Wee Kok
Executive Secretary
Singapore Dragon Boat Association
